Before I get into the news about the people and organizations fighting the Trump administration, I want to acknowledge the heartbreak and anger a lot of us are feeling about revelations of Cesar Chavez's ill-treatment of girls and women who trusted him and believed in him on behalf a critical workers' rights movement. Although I am deeply saddened that many women, including Dolores Huerta, suffered because of his evil actions, these revelations didn't shock me. Aside from the rumors and documented problems that have circulated about Chavez for longer than I have been in the labor movement (close to 30 years), the mistreatment of women in leftist organizations is rampant. Like those women, I have gone through things (thankfully far less violent) that I kept to myself because it would harm "the movement." I've worked with many men for whom the ends (even their own personal ends) justified the means, who claimed they were acting in the name of "The Workers."

Chavez's actions ultimately held back the change that we need in our food labor systems, both through his monomaniacal leadership style and because of what he stole from the women and children around him.

So I will just say here what I've said in the several conversations I've had. It is the farmworkers movement that is the hero. The workers together are the heroes. Farmworkers showed us that; Minneapolis has shown us that. The movement is the hero. The people together have the power to be our own heroes.
