Quick Round-Up for the Low Attention Span Reader
Comedy, Movies, IG, Music - no reading required
Dear Friends:
I’m in a reading drought and until I get out of it, I’m finding entertainment in other genres. Here’s what I’ve been into lately.
Zarna Garg is an Indian-American woman who started doing stand-up comedy a couple of years ago at the urging of her daughter. She has a special on Hulu, Practical People Win, that you can now watch since we don’t have to boycott Disney affiliated companies this week. A joke that I wrote down from one of her routines: “One thing you should know about Indian men and the Kama Sutra, none of them have read it. Just like Americans with their Constitution.”
The Instagram account Dead Greg’s Recipes. David Zarco makes recipes from the “cookbag” of his friend’s dead uncle Greg. The cookbag (a large freezer bag) is filled with smaller freezer bags full of handwritten recipes. Greg died of alcoholism so not all the recipes are perfectly legible. The other day I watched him make Tomato Cake which involved adding baking soda to a can of tomato soup. It turned out well, apparently. Another good account that makes weird old recipes is Cooking With Congress. Bennett Rea spends each video eating like one of presidents, first ladies,or other politicians for a day. It’s pretty funny, especially when he also drinks as much as they do.
As for movies, it’s basically been throwbacks. Last night, we watched The Devil Wears Prada, which we had somehow never seen before. It’s really funny and I now have a way of lightheartedly telling my spouse to hurry up. “By all means, move at a glacial pace. You know how that thrills me,” is top tier writing. I loved it. I can’t wait for the sequel next year.
By the way, I actually think Devil Wears Prada is a labor movie. It’s the millennial version of 9 to 5. The main difference is that between 1980 and 2009, women lost the imagination for how to get back at their boss. Recommend re-watching 9 to 5 if you haven’t seen it in a while or at all.
A couple weeks ago, we saw the new Naked Gun with Liam Neeson and Pam Anderson. If you knew me in high school, you know that I fucking love Naked Gun and Police Squad. This version was even better than some of the sequels. I was giggling madly throughout.
My new music intake is almost as bad as my reading habits right now, but our friend Dan just released a new album with his band Animal Mouth. Check it out!
The other thing I’ve been playing on repeat is Rich City by Fijiana. Enjoy:
